God is Powerful

“His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.”Psalm 97:4-5
That is our God. Speaking the world into existence. Calling each star by name. His very creation trembles and melts before Him.

Not only that...

“...his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead...”Ephesians 1:19-20

That same power LIVES IN US. Let that sink in for a minute. The God who sustains all things by His powerful word DWELLS IN US.

There is nothing easy about fostering. We can begin to feel completely tapped out- nothing left to give. All done now- please stop the ride. I want to get off.

But we have everything we need to do everything God has called us to do- because we have HIM.

Grace that is greater

We’ve been in DC this weekend. In relentless rain. Oh and a hurricane is heading toward part two of our vacation.  This has been the kids’ dream trip ( #homeschoolers , right?! ). Yesterday I walked in the rain with my crying 10 year old between Smithsonian buildings. “I’m finally in WASHINGTON DC! And it’s raining! I’ve looked forward to this for SO LONG!” (Have I mentioned before that he’s a tad int ense?!) This weekend has actually been a gift to our family. It’s been a time to rehearse that all of God’s gifts to us are good. And when He gives us rain instead of sunshine, it is an opportunity to give thanks. Give thanks for rain ponchos. Give thanks for $1 bus rides. Give thanks that we are together. Give thanks for amazing museums and opportunities to learn. Give thanks for a dry, safe place to sleep. God is Omnipresent

Sometimes the surrender is the journey.

I’ve been stocking our freezer. It’s one of the little rituals I find myself doing when life gets uncertain- I freezer stockpiled before 2020 made it cool. It’s comforting to have all those meals ready to grab and go. It’s also a little sad to see those pathetic attempts at control all lined up in sharpie-labeled gallon ziplocks. This current push to stockpile came from news that there was possibly a fifth child who could be heading to our family. Possibly. Maybe but we weren’t sure. But if XYZ happened, it was a definite (maybe). Fostercare is fun like that. Honestly, six years of living with some level of limbo and uncertainty are wearing me out.  This (possible) (probable) (within the realm of possibility) news set us in a tailspin. A 2020 homeschool peptalk

It’s time for a homeschool peptalk. I see you, feeling all the stress of 2020 somehow piling up and making planning for the new school year feel extra daunting. I see you, fielding questions from friends considering crisis homeschooling for the coming year, feeling excited for them, or fearful of legal ramifications, or conflicted about whether it’s even a good idea for them to homeschool in the first place. Maybe you haven’t been inside your church for four months. Maybe yo u haven’t left your house in two. Maybe your schedule is somehow returning to pre-COVID levels but with extra stress heaped up and a face mask strapped on top. God has not changed. The mission has not changed. We have been given the privilege of raising our kids with a wider view of the world and a deeper appreciation for what is true and good and beautiful. It is a worthwhile calling. ‘Twil Soon Be Past

I got my black dress out of the closet this morning. We have a gathering today, a time to mark the homegoing of a beloved man in our church family. I also have been talking with family members this weekend as we anticipate one of our membership going to see his King very soon. Last week I had a hard conversation with a friend as we wrestled with the fragility of our days.  This is hard. This season is hard.  The Bible says our days are like a vapor. Like a flower in the field. There, and gone.  Today as I prepare my heart for the hours ahead this verse is on my mind.  “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.” Ecclesiastes 7:2 This is the end of all mankind.  I’ve been listening to John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life. December warm-up: Joy Missions

The weather outside has been unseasonably warm. Inside, not so warm. Our kids have had short tempers and sharp words with one another in the past couple of days. Several months ago I had introduced them to the old J-O-Y acronym – Jesus first, then others, you last! They had locked onto that and bring it up from time to time. Today, when having a little family meeting to apologize and repair broken relationships after a rough morning, LB said the way they had been acting was like “YOJ.” Putting themselves first. As it is December first, we came up with a quick advent project: JOY missions. {It’s not a pinterest-worthy label and it’s crookedly scotch-taped on, but it does involve scented markers and a mason jar we found floating in a lake while canoeing this summer. Does that count?}  ;) We wrote out some secret missions: Let someone else go first. Clean someone else’s room. Make someone’s bed. Choose a toy to give away. Write an encouraging note. S...

God is Trustworthy

We had been foster parents for two years, and had had three babies placed with us at that time. Three babies we had loved and hoped for and grieved hard goodbyes. And then suddenly, God steered us down a path of adoption for an older sibling pair who had been in care for years. Their story gripped us, and while the county dragged the process along for months and months before we had even met them, God continued to confirm this was what He wanted us to do. Months went by as the agency weeded out dozens of potential families for L&P. We felt like we were being strung along- like this was some crazy adoption version of the bachelor. We met them. Exhaling praise

On Monday our dreams came true. After nearly twenty years of talking and dreaming of adoption with my husband, after a five year fostering journey full of plot twists and joy and grief, after a year of riding a crazy ride of a case including such clear leading from the Lord and reassurance that she is our daughter and unexpected complications and even hiring a private attorney to fight for her   and nothing (NOTHING) seeming to go as planned... The gavel dropped. And it was done. People keep asking me how I feel. How do I feel? I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for five years holding on for dear life as this roller coaster ride threatened to tear me apart. I feel like if I really sit down and think about it all I might cry for three days out of relief and joy. But right now I’m still holding my breath out of habit. Dear foster mama with the crazy eyes

You are not crazy. This system is legit crazy. I know this feels like war. It is. But the people involved are not your enemy. Our battle is not against flesh and blood. Do not lose sight of that and try to fight against ones who will bleed from the war just like you do. I know this feels out of control. It is not. Our God is the sovereign One who sits enthroned above the earth. Your times, her  times, are in His hands. Rest in His sovereignty and His goodness and His grace. When you rest, you can laugh, you can enjoy the good gifts your Father has given today. Gifts like holding her, right now. Feel the weight of her in your arms. She is a gift. The way she looks at you, the way she trusts you, look to Him and trust Him like that. I know this feels too much for you. It is. He did not design you to carry this weight alone. What I wish people knew about our homeschool

Many times when people comment to me that they could never do homeschooling, the comment is being made on the heels of an unexpected break from school (extreme cold snap, multiple snow days... a pandemic) when the students are sent home with packets of work to complete at home. I don't know how to fully explain how much  not  like homeschooling that is. I think there is a general misunderstanding of our homeschool life that I would love to clarify. And when I say "homeschool," I'm going to limit my comments to our  experience of homeschooling here at Stephens Academy. Every single family is different, kids are different, there are about a million different curriculum options and methods and variables. But here are some things I wish people knew about us.
