God is Omnipresent

“Where shall I go from your Spirit?Or where shall I flee from your presence?If I ascend to heaven, you are there!If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!If I take the wings of the morningand dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,even there your hand shall lead me,and your right hand shall hold me.If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,and the light about me be night,”even the darkness is not dark to you;the night is bright as the day,for darkness is as light with you.”Psalm 139:7-12
There is nowhere out of the reach of our omnipresent God- a child does not need to be in OUR home to be loved and reached by OUR God.

Last night we sat at a banquet with other foster parents. We sat between two couples who are friends of ours but who did not yet know one another - one couple we have known over a decade, one we recently met but have connected with deeply. Both are fellow followers of Jesus, and it is a sweet thing to share a heart for foster care and adoption with the same mission in mind.

While we talked we realized they each had different members of the same sibling group placed with them recently - and the remaining siblings had been with another Christ-following couple we know. It was amazing to hear how God had placed each sibling or set of siblings in Christian homes, to realize how God was answering prayers prayed for them in different homes at the same time to the same end. He displayed His love to those children in a profound and beautiful synchrony while they were broken hearted to be separated for a brief time.

What a beautiful reminder that while we cannot see the big picture He is painting, He can.

God is omnipresent. He is with us, with the children we love who are with us, with the children we love who are no longer with us, with their biological families.

Where can we go from His Spirit? Neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Many times when people comment to me that they could never do homeschooling, the comment is being made on the heels of an unexpected break from school (extreme cold snap, multiple snow days... a pandemic) when the students are sent home with packets of work to complete at home. On education and setting the table.

We are about ready for #StephensAcademy 2020-2021. Even though we’ve done this for over a decade now, every year is a bit different with different ages and challenges and opportunities. This year, we will gather around our “morning time” table with a high schooler, middle schooler, elementary schooler, and preschooler. How do we do that?, people ask. At the center of this room stands a table that NP and I bought used to furnish our first apartment. A lot of meals have been eaten around that table. It’s been a gathering place for years and years. It seems fitting to have our old kitchen table in the schoolroom now, because education is a lot less like an assembly line and a lot more like spreading a feast. No one asks me how we possibly provide food for a family of six. The bigger the family, the more prep might be involved, it might take more time, some might need things cut up smaller or dietary needs taken into consideration.
